Contemporary Abstracted Landscape Painting by Kimberly Conrad

© Victoria Franklin Designs, INC
"Shifting" This little skyscape pretty much depicts the character of Colorado weather!! It has now been snowing for two days, but was in the high 60's just before, and will be warm again by the weekend. In any given week we can have everything from shorts and bike rides to blizzards. I LOVE IT!!!! Original painting on 8x10 140 lb watercolor paper. This painting will fit a ready made 8x10 frame, or may be matted and framed to a larger size. NEST, 9098, textured bird nest with eggs by Carol Nelson, Colorado, USA

There is something intimate about peeking into a bird's nest to see a clutch of eggs. It is a sight rarely seen, and it is reassuring, in a way, to see nature's wild creatures going on with their life's business as they have for thousands of years.
I painted this piece on Gessoboard, which is a very smooth surface. To suggest a structure of weeds, grasses and twigs surrounding the eggs, I used heavy body acrylic paints mixed with modeling paste applied with a palette knife. The knife edge gave the thin, grass-like strokes I was looking for.
This painting is sold, but, stay tuned, as I plan on doing a series of eggs in nests.

"Change is Afoot" by Kate Dardine

The other night I decided to just play with paint and see where it took me...and here are the results. I like the playful quality of the piece, and the fact that it is a departure from what I usually do. That is the whole point of just allowing myself to paint without censor. Sometimes I stumble on a new technique, sometimes I just make a mess. Either outcome is okay - it is all about the process of allowing creativity to have free rein. I titled this 11x14 oil on 1-1/2" gallery wrapped canvas "Change Is Afoot" - and leave the interpretation to you.

"Fiery Twilight" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

ALERT: You are about to view art of a different nature. These are paintings on glass -- that is, painted directly onto glass with specially formulated glass paints. They are always framed for the protection of the glass. The paints often are transparent and sometimes opaque, giving a stained glass appearance under good light. They, like all fine art, should not be hung in direct sunlight. The photographs do not do them justice -- my colors are very vibrant. Close ups are available, just e-mail me for information (see below). Click on the actual image for a larger image -- you'll see marbelization, transparent or opaque aspects of the painting. Commissions are accepted.

"Fiery Twilight" is just that -- a sunset/dusk/sundown painting loaded up with color, color, and then even more color. There is a luminescence here -- it's hard to see on a computer monitor, unfortunately, but a glow just as the sun does going down behind the mountains and hills. I have to say, this is one painting I am extremely proud of having created. I love it!

"Fiery Twilight", framed painting on glass, 8"x10", $295 includes s&h in N. America, Paypal preferred, click button below or write KarlaNolan@gmail. com for more information

More news: I was accepted by Dobbin Gallery, 175 Church Street, Charleston, South Carolina, for representation in their art gallery with paintings on glass, pastels, oils and table jewelry. Please visit their gallery when in town! It's a lovely place.
...And...I am also a Wild Hands Art Gallery artist, on Pearl Street in Jackson, Wyoming, with my paintings on glass!
...More....I am proud to announce that Common Ground Western Art in Red Lodge, Montana, is now representing me, also.

CITYSCAPE 2, 9097, abstracted city rooftops and architecture by Carol Nelson, Colorado, USA

This is a larger version of the DSFDF photo of city roof tops. The first version I did is much smaller and is a mixed media piece - see blog entry of 10/18/2009. This one is on canvas and it simply acrylic paints and modeling compound . I've been working on this painting for about two weeks and it has undergone numerous transformations. I am finally happy with the result.

Being an abstracted version of the photo, it is all about patterns, negative space, and focal point. As you can see the complexity of the shapes increases to the right and slightly below the middle of the painting. Rotating the painting to a vertical format yields an equally interesting composition.

The colors evolved on their own. The reference photo was mostly subtle tones of blue, grey and yellow. Most of my work is not subtle in terms of palette! I love strong value contrasts so I was able to go nuts with this one.

HYDRANGEA BOUQUET, 9096, impasto still life of blue hydrangeas by Carol Nelson, Colorado, USA

This painting is a commission piece for a collector who lives in Hawaii. With all the beautiful tropical flowers around her, she still misses the deep blues of the hydrangeas she remembers from the northeast. Her request was that the painting be predominantly of the flowers, have deep cobalt blues, and heavy impasto. SOLD

"Reflections" original poured abstracted landscape on 8x10 140 lb watercolor paper. this painting will fit a ready made 8x10 frame, or may be matted and framed to a larger size. It has a companion piece which will be posted tomorrow. I spent yesterday "pouring" and today I will begin two very large commissioned palette knife pieces. I'm really excited, as I have really been missing the palette knife. It snowed here yesterday, and though I pour in the lower studio, I oil paint in the upper studio, so I will get to paint today in front of my great big windows..looking out at the snow.Yes..I'm a nerd, but I love the snow, and I love to paint upstairs where "life" is happening:) To view larger paintings of this kind, or my other works, visit www.kimberlyconradfineart.com

TWELVE, 9091, abstract composition using decorative stone tiles by Carol Nelson, Colorado, USA

First, I bought the little tiles at Loews, then I created a composition to feature them. Actually, I don't know if they're tiles or stones. They have all the surface irregularity of genuine stone. I love the rugged textured look of the stone/tiles and the subtle colors are incredibly beautiful - OK, I might have enhanced the colors a tiny bit.
This piece is mounted on MDF board panel. It ended up to be quite heavy for such a small piece. For purchase information, please see my website.
