This is another mini abstract I picked out on a sheet of painted watercolor paper. I allowed colors to flow together in a random fashion, the added a few strokes to strengthen the composition.

This summer when I went to our CSA to pick up our weekly produce, we were encouraged to pick a bunch of flowers from their flower garden. I picked an armful of blooms, brought them home, plopped them into a vase and set them on a sunny windowsill. The blossoms were lovely, but what was going on under the water was even more interesting to me. So that's what I painted with greatest care and interest. Many times it's what lies beneath the surface that is the most captivating.

I recently became an art instructor for Grumbacher Paints. Their class curriculum guarantees that the class participants will "complete an acrylic painting in two hours!" Hmmm...... So now I'm learning to finish a painting in two hours!! I prepare for the class by creating one painting in the allotted two hours. Then, I paint it again while I demo it for the students. This headlong rush to complete 2-hour paintings has been great fun! I've learned to choose simple images that can be painted with a very limited palette. Every brush stroke counts!
Here's a painting from a recent class. The image is an inky pool at the Denver Botanical Garden with a water lily dancing on its surface.

"Dream Clouds" by Karla Nolan, oil painting
This painting is a combo -- palette knife oils and some brushwork. I'm back in the experimental stage again, go figure! All because I inadvertently packed too quickly last week to join fellow painters, omitting my palette knives (I must have 30 of them -- a bit fanatical, wouldn't you say?) So...I was FORCED to use brushes and didn't find them to be as revolting (okay, I exaggerate!) as I remembered, almost could say I enjoyed them. I had begun this particular painting some time ago and have returned to it periodically -- sunsets and poppies seems to be my passions right now -- so here's another Rocky Mountain sunset just for YOU!

This is another from my study of Edgar Payne's compositions: circle. In this one I'm using the tree trunks and the lines of the ground to create the circle. I'm bringing you into the composition near the lower left, having your eye come across the diagonal of the ground to the bottom of the aspen trunks on the bottom right, up the trunks, across the top of the mountain range and down the trunks in a kind of geometric circle.

KM2537 Autumn Reflections by Kit Hevron Mahoney (autumn, waterscape, fall, landscape)
I am painting like mad for several upcoming miniature shows. This is for our upcoming show at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery here in Denver that opens on First Friday November 4, 2010. I am enamored with the peaceful, colorful fall reflections scenes. I have done this scene larger and had fun putting it to a smaller canvas.
The other shows opening on Dec 4 are at Abend Gallery in Denver and Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado.
