This piece is a true mixed media painting.  It has suede leather, aluminum foil, patterned felt, wc paper, and burlap on a textured panel.  I worked on this painting on and off all last week.  There were several points where I applied some part and then had to wait overnight for the gel medium to dry.

Originally, I was playing around using real aspen twigs in the piece.  I collected several twigs from the yard and tried to incorporate them into the design.  Aspen branches do not grow flat! I could have overcome that problem, but my biggest concern was what would happen to them over time - would they deteriorate?  I coated some with gel medium and they looked great, but I still was worried about the longevity. If anyone out there has any experience with using real tree branches in artwork, I would like to know about it.

I had so much fun painting this scene from a photo I took last Spring in the Hill Country of Texas. I have painted many pets and some cows but am loving the challenge of a newer subject matter (the Texas Shorthorn). I photograph any animal that happens my way and always love to photograph cattle but they are hard to capture without "posing" as they are always curious as to what I am up to and all turn to investigate me! Thus, this scene of everyone looking my way!

"Newport Sail" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on gessoed masonite

This painting is combination palette knife oil painting and brush painting.  It was extremely frustrating for me to paint, as I was attempting to make the boat perfect, which is out of character for me -- I usually go a more relaxed route.  However, I am pleased with it.  We were recently on the East Coast and I took dozens of photographs of sailboats for reference photos -- this was a great start to more water and boat scenes.  I hope you like it!

When I work on a heavily textured painting I like to use the flexible modeling paste (made by Liquitex) on canvas. This paste is formulated to be able to stretch and not crack if the canvas or paint undergo some environmental changes.

KMD2561 Who's Watching Whom by Kit Hevron Mahoney (Shorthorn, cow, cattle, livestock, original oil painting)

I seem to be on an animal kick lately. I did a large painting of some Texas Shorthorns (See it on my website) and had so much fun doing it that I had to create a daily painting of one as well. Getting photo reference of these magnificent animals is always a challenge, for when I stand before them with a camera they stop whatever they are doing and stare back at me in wonder of what I am up to.
