This painting exhibits the design made famous by Piet Mondrian (straight lines dividing up the space), the color palette of Anders Zorn (yellow ochre, cadmium red, black, white), plus several textural elements (newsprint, acrylic medium grid pattern, crackle paste.)

Yes, the black lines ARE straight - the camera distorts them slightly.

It is a demo piece for my Metals and Mixed Media workshop.  In the workshop, students choose from several design patterns, several color palettes, and numerous texture effects to make their own unique abstract paintings.

Last year I went to Carol Marine's workshop. Which was fantastic by the way! She had us count our brushstrokes. That way each stroke had a purpose. It was a great lesson for me. So, this little pear was done in 54 brushstrokes. :)

Here is another poppy painting rendered using only brushes as opposed to my palette knife work. I was especially drawn to the pastel colors of these delicate yet so hardy flowers. It is fun to have a variety of tools to use to express myself through my art.

This is a demo piece I did in the Granbury, Texas, workshop last week.  It has embedded tyvek, glazed foil, and heavy texture.  I haven't painted the backing board that it will be mounted on yet, but will get a picture of that in the next few days.

I have a big show coming up in two weeks, so have to really get busy painting for that.  If you're in Denver June 11 and 12, be sure to stop by the Summer Art Market at the  Art Students League of Denver, 2nd and Grant.

I blocked in color in sections on my canvas. I like to paint the darkest focus, first.
This is where the viewers eye perceives depth.
I line up my first (middle) completed canvas next to my working canvas.
I want these to be a continuous landscape.
So on to painting my trees.

For this piece I'm pretty much standing in the same spot on the stern of the boat.  I think that I painted these last two pieces between about 5:30 and 7:30.  It was a quiet first evening.  People were resting or out on the beaches exploring (no, not like warm sun-tan beaches!)

Kissing Camels

I went out to catch Pikes Peak in the morning light, and this pair of clouds moved in to obscure the view. Instead I caught the sun glow on Kissing Camels in the Garden of the Gods. The rocks are rendered with palette knife, and my trusty brush filled in the rest. This 8 x 10 original oil painting is available by contacting me at mbbrock@comcast.net. My husband and I just got home from three weeks in and around Sitka, Alaska.  We had an incredible trip. Our first few days were spent in Sitka in SE Alaska.    It's a beautiful town, on the water, with incredible scenery.

The next ten days five of us spent on a boat in the Inside Passage.  This is where we anchored the first night.  It takes awhile to get used to the sun setting at 9:30 and rising at about 4:30.  We put towels over the porthole window.

What do you do when your daughter graduates college, moves across the country, thus making you a true empty nester? Paint her portrait of course! I snapped this picture of her last month when we were in Disney Word visiting my other daughter, Anna, (she works there). And now EMily works there too!

I typically don't paint people. This is maybe my 5th or 6th attempt. I still don't know how I did it.

Here in another one of the roosters I painted this week. I have always enjoyed painting chickens, and our trip to Kauai a few weeks ago provided me with many wonderful reference photos. The roosters, hens and chicks were everywhere and a very colorful sight. I was also impressed with the hens, devoted to their chicks and raising them under insane conditions, by the side of the road, on parking lots and golf courses.

A Triptych Journey, creating a large oil painting part 1

This is the second of three canvas blocked in.

I usually use a base color in each section that can show through the finished painting.

I have found using and shipping a very large canvas can be a challenge, so I love to use several

This painting is continuous and  painted in series.

These aspen trees from last Autumn, 

 are  so beautiful and always changing.
