Rusted Door 5 x 7 Acrylic Itlay Landscape Painting

$125.00 + $10.00 S/H

When I was visiting Italy I was captivated by much of the architecture, and for some unknown reason specifically doors. Maybe because they were more accessible at eye level. Whatever the reason, I took a multitude of pictures and now I am starting to paint some of them. This beautiful rusted specimen was in Sienna Italy. If this door could only speak! Maybe it does, what do you think?

"PORTAL" 12007, mixed media contemporary abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Portal"

Sometimes, when you go back through old paintings done years earlier, you fine one that would benefit from the knowledge you have attained during the intervening years.

That was the case with this paper collage painting.  I really wish I had taken a "before" picture.  Compositionally, this is a better painting. Color wise, it is a hell of a better painting, if I do say so myself.

Originally, I had a muted blue, green, brown and gray palette. Blech.  I made the blue more purple, the green more turquoise, and the brown more orange.  Added a tiny bit of red.  Those warm tones on a predominantly cool toned painting really give it sparkle.

The white is the torn edge of the paper.  For more information on this painting, click here to go to my website.

KMD2721 Nostalgia by Kit Hevron Mahoney (red barn, countryside, landscape)

As I drive our front range outside of Denver these days I see fewer and fewer barns giving way to housing and shopping developments. I spotted this barn outside of Fort Collins when driving home from a visit with my sister. These old structures conjure up different memories for all of us which is why I like to paint them.

Chicken Painting ~Janice Warriner

Marshmalow Chicken

6 by 6 acrylic on wood panel

available!

This is not really the appropriate breed name of this chicken, however, we bought two of these little roosters at the auction. The are solid black with this miniature white marshmallow thingy on the sides of their heads, so I started calling them marshmallow chickens!

"BURNISHED" 12006, acrylic copper geologic abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Burnished

This geologic abstract has a mat that I painted with two shades of copper acrylic.  Since there is copper and gold paint in the painting, I thought it really enhanced the work.

The bevel on the mat was white.  I painted the bevel black and let the paint smudge out on to the mat a bit. It looks very much like the mat is made from copper metal.

A Poem for the Fall - original impressionist oil painting by Laura Reilly

"A Poem for the Fall"
original oil on panel, 12" x 6" x 3/8"
painting continues around sides for a beautiful finish.

This painting is from one of my favorite locations here in Colorado Springs, to hike, paint, and enjoy the serenity of nature - Sondermann Park.  There's a creek that wanders through a protected wetlands, full of wildlife and birds.  I've come across walkers and bikers and classes of kids experiencing science in the wild.    I've often painted here, delighting  in the brilliant hues of the fall foliage.

A Note About My Daily Painting Practice
This is a significant creative challenge, painting a small work of art  every day or so.  It's upped the ante for me as an artist and as a creative professional - how best to make a profound and meaningful statement, visually, about my chosen subject - make it good, make it meaningful, make it the best painting I am capable of - and not as easy as one might think,  to create a compelling work of  art on a small scale. I am loving it!  Thanks for sharing my journey.

"POLKA DOT HEART" 12005, contemporary textured dot heart valentine © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Polka Dot Heart

I was reading an article about a show of Damian Hirst's work, which includes all his dot paintings, at Gagosian Gallery in New York.

You may be familiar with this very controversial British artist, much of whose work is about death.  His most famous piece is a human skull encrusted with over 8000 diamonds.

For more information on my polka dot heart, which can be had for a tiny fraction of the price of a Hirst painting, click here to go to my website.

Susan Spohn -- Yarrow and Mouse (starting)

The Process of a New Painting...

Today I started a new painting. First I did a value study on my board. I just brushed in grey tones to lay out the general painting.
I do not often start with a value study, but this painting had a limited subject matter and really only one and 1/2 types of flowers. The painting will work or not work depending on the the values I choose and the drama.  Below you can see the start of the colorization process. I added  a mouse, (the painting was just calling out for this little guy...) Tomorrow I will finish the painting with my pallet knives.

Susan Spohn --- Lizard Laps Around the Poppy Patch

Lizard Laps Around the Poppy Patch
48 x 10

Finished the painting with the lizards in it today.  I do like how this painting evolved. It is quite dramatic when you view it in person. I used a combination of pallet knives and brushes to create this vivid painting. Git Along Little Doggies by Pam Holnback

Git Along Little Doggies
8" x 8"  Oil on Cradled Panel

This is the companion piece to the rancher that I posted last month.  He's still working hard!  Just trying to get those doggies (calves) up and over the hill.

Chicken Painting Artist, Janice Warriner

About 5 years ago, my family lived on a small acreage. It's a good thing we moved to Colorado, because I would've probably ended up on animal hoarders. For Mothers day, I got 3 lambs, for my birthday, we went to a chicken auction, where we got over 20 chickens and roosters. For Easter I got 2 twin lambs that needed to be bottle fed...should I keep going? Because I could! Getting 24 baby chicks in the mail ..yes the post office was especially exciting! Anyways, someone asked me to paint her some paintings of chickens so I got out our farm pics and started going through them. I ended up going on a chicken painting craze!

KMD2715 Fall's Riches by Kit Hevron Mahoney

I was recently commissioned to do a large painting of this scene and thought it would be fun to do as a daily painting. This scene is from a drive to Santa Fe, New Mexico several years back. It was the end of the day when the light was low and glowing across the landscape on the Colorado - New Mexico border. I have painted from the photo reference of that trip many times as I caught such a magical moment that continues to inspire me.

3 Minute Study, Figurative Art, Figurative Paintings, Colorado Artist Carol Hein

One of my goals this year is to loosen up. To help accomplish that goal I began studying with Kim English at the Art Student's League. In each class we warm up with a series of 3 minute paintings. Each week I will keep one of the poses (we do at least 30 paintings a week) and post it here so that you can follow the journey with me. Please feel free to offer critiques and encouragement as we go along. These studies are not for sale because I want to be able to look back at the semester and, hopefully track progress to my goal. "Jack" By Kelli Miller

This is Jack. He is my 5 year old going on 6 month old lab. If I were to tell you all of his antics I would have a blog that rivals Marley and Me. Actually... Jack makes Marley look like an angel. But I love him anyway:)

Funny story about this painting. I started it 41/2 years ago. It was going so well that I became frozen with fear that I would screw it up. After I did the painting of Tucker, I thought that it just wasn't fair to Jack so I dug this out and finished it! Suddenly I love painting dogs!!!

Jack said  this painting reminds him of all the times we've spent on warm fall afternoons,
hanging out by the creek, enjoying the fall sunshine and breezes, just messing around.
Spent many an enjoyable afternoon that way, with various kids, friends, and dogs!

"HEART ON THE MEND" 12004, mixed media abstract heart © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Heart on the Mend

I am seeing Valentine's Day items in the stores, so I thought I would try doing a mixed media approach to depicting this holiday all about love.

Valentine's Day is mostly for lovers, but who hasn't had their heart broken at some time?  I actually thought of this composition while listening to Christina Perry's Jar of Hearts - a GREAT song.

This 6x6 heart is on a masonite panel and is textured with crackle paste.  The heart has cracks in it, but has red sateen ribbons holding it together - on the mend I'm thinking.
