Opening in Fort Collins this Friday, March 2, 2012

Forest Elements, 12x48

This painting just won the top spot in a collage competition on Fine Art America - woo hoo!  Today, I delivered this one, and 9 other paintings, to the gallery in Fort Collins, Colorado, (Old Town ART & Framery) where my work will be featured with a reception from 6pm to 9pm this Friday.

I had never seen the gallery before and I was very pleasantly surprised. The back of the space houses a complete frame shop, and the front is a lovely gallery space with exposed brick walls, and the warm, stylish decorating of Jim Benest, the Art Czar.

Jim has collected a group of artists that definitely reflects his
contemporary taste.  I was worried my work would be a little too
abstract, but it fit right in with the vibe of this vibrant gallery, in the heart of Fort Collins' Old Town gallery district.

Contemporary Abstract landscape oil painting

Summer Clouds 2
30x40 oil/acrylic

Loving Clouds
How I love to watch the clouds
Peacefully, peacefully drifting by
Silently upon the breeze
They ease across the clear blue sky.

How they build and roll and tumble
Just like angels out to play
Dancing with the sylphs and fairies
Head o'er heels along the way.

Each new shape is quite amusing:
Puffs to great majestic towers
Building for their loving gift
To bless the earth with vital showers.

Kaanapali Beach, Maui Hawaii - Impressionistic Landscape by Pam Holnback

Kaanapali Beach,  Maui Hawaii
6" x 8"  Oil
$100.00 + $10. s/h
SOLD

After a week in Hana we headed over to the other side of Maui.  This part of the island was completely different...white sand beaches, resorts, condos, stores.  This morning I set up on the beach while there was still shade on the sand.   I had expected wide, wide beaches.  Only a few of the beaches were like that.  Many were very narrow.

Blue Fields of Colorado 5 x 7 Acrylic Landscape Painting of Colorado

$125.00 + $10.00 S/H

This scene is in southern Colorado near Durango. I was really drawn to these fields of blue flowers back dropped with the colorful building shapes. I understand that my fascination with these flowers isn't shared by the local ranchers however. It seems these plants are noxious weeds and toxic to horses and cattle. Another example of what one person likes is another persons' angst.

Pretty in Pink

The last flamingo I painted was a big hit with everyone and I have been trying to paint one ever since... but so many other paintings keep coming up. Well late this afternoon, I started this lovely creature. She is shy and demure, but also confident in her pink beauty. She was a paler pink flamingo, my last painting had a more deep orange cast to its feathers. Contact me to purchase this painting. Blog: susanmspohn.blogspot.com  Website: susanmspohn.com

KMA2739 Beyond Horizons by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney

It is difficult to describe how I create my abstract paintings as it is such an intuitive process. Of course my results are a culmination of life experience and everything I have been exposed to in addition to all the art I peruse looking for inspiration. This painting evolved seemingly into a landscape and I let it "paint itself" once I saw a direction in it. I am off to some great adventures on Kauai with my good friends Connie and Pat. Posting will be sporadic for the next 10 days as I enjoy this vacation but know I will return home with yet many new inspirations!

This painting is exciting (to me).  I love the color harmony. It's a new technique I discovered by accident - I'm always experimenting you know. Usually I'm very open about my techniques, but I'm going to be stingy about this one.

I might present it to my workshop artists.  Right now I'm too enthralled with it to share.

I noticed that on my iPad, the image at the top of this post looked too dark. Above is a lighter version.  Variations in monitors makes it hard to judge how much light/dark to have on the photo.

Fishing the River original watercolor Janice Trane Jones

"Fishing the River" is an original watercolor on arches 300 lb paper that measures 11 x 15 unframed. The purchase includes a 16 x 20 white mat making this ready for a frame upon arrival.
I love to fly fish and the fish are calling my name up in the Rockies of Colorado. I love to watch much better fisherman than I cast to a pool or riffle and see a brown or brookie rise to the caddis or blue wing olive and then leap out of the water.

I have to admit I don't know what kind of trees these are but, they are amazing! Such brilliant color in the landscape! It was almost like I was looking at something out of a science fiction novel. I hope you get a sense of the grandeur of these specimens from my painting.

Hana Hibiscus - 100 Garden & Floral Oil Paintings 99/100
6" x 6"  Oil
SOLD

One morning on Maui I painted in a small orchard where there were also numerous flowers.  We all become familiar with our own environment.  My environment, Colorado, of course doesn't have tropical plants or flowers.  I loved all the hibiscus blooming everywhere...I didn't even know the name of this flower before this trip!

KMA2734 Soaring Dreams by contemporary Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney

This painting was inspired from a small abstract that I created with my oil paints. Whenever I finish one of my oil paintings, I use the remaining paint to create a small abstract. I then choose my favorites of these to use as inspiration for my larger abstract paintings. It is such a great journey from leftover paints to a final creation. I never quite know where I will end. I really love the colors in this one.

KMD2735 Perception in Red by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney

With winter still coming on strong here in Denver (once again it is snowing as remnants of the last snow had almost melted off) I look into images that will bring spring closer. So, of course I reach for my familiar and favorite; poppies. This piece was inspired from a picture taken in Estes Park, Colorado where there was a full garden of these delightful red gems.

"OPERETTA" 12017 mixed media contemporary textured abstract painting © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Operetta

detail

wall view

This painting gets it's name from the musical symbols printed in the  piece.  Unlike grand opera, which is always tragic, operettas are kind of like the chick flick of opera.  There is romance, music and dancing and more of a light humorous approach.

This painting reminded me of a playbill pasted on a wall somewhere.  It has textural elements such as Egyptian papyrus  paper, printed papers, and strips of painted watercolor paper.

The  close color harmony of the palette, primarily metallic tones of copper  and bronze, with a touch of lavendar and red oxide, makes this painting  soothing.  The dramatic value (dark vs. light) shifts make it a dynamic  piece.

Susan Spohn --- Good Morning Garden

Good Morning Garden
12 x 16

Ah, sunshine, gardens and chickens--- what contentment a person can behold.  I have combined all three in this texture filled painting. Chickens can be used as  a natural insect control. Of course they like vegetables too, so in the vegetable garden they need to be in an open bottom cage that you can move up and down the aisle ways.  This painting is for sale for $245.00 contact me for more details and shipping costs. susanmspohn.blogspot.com
