"Fauvist Self Portrait #1" by Saundra Lane Galloway

I've been trying to get over my fear of portraits by working in the fauvist style and getting some pointers from my friend and most wonderful artist Carol Nelson. She is currently working on 100 fauvist portraits in 100 days and most graciously allowed me to come over and watch her work and practice with some very important tips from her.

I learned several things during my day with Carol. One is that the typical acrylics are very difficult to do portraits with and the end result looks a bit cartoonish or paint by numberish. I also learned to not fear skin color, but to watch the values. I worked from a photo that had the contrasts bumped up a good bit so I could imagine colors better and see the shadow areas much easier. And, I learned it isn't as easy as it looks! But it was a blast! I thank my friend Carol and though this wasn't the smashing success, I count it valuable in the learning process! Oh, and I learned I am definately NOT afraid of color! HA
