As we wander through these ancient canyons, we can’t help to wonder what dramas played out right here on this spot eons ago. Was cave-lady Susie jealous because her man flirted with another woman? Was the bead work on her leather dress last year’s style? Did her child disobey and run over by the rattlesnake den? Did they simply have a different version of the same conflicts and irritations we create today? 24"x24" Oil on Panel/ Available Click HERE for purchase info. The weather can change at a moment’s notice – one minute it is dark and stormy and next the sun is peeking through or glaring hot and clear. In one of the unpredictable sunny moments, I started painting on a white panel, trying to quickly capture the essence of the moment. A white panel gives me the option of using a rubber scraping tool to delicately remove wet paint to indicate white branches and other little accents.
This peaceful little tributary joins the mighty Colorado River downstream just around the bend, and the mood changes from intimate and peaceful to open and impartial.
To capture the feeling of an expansive landscape a wide but not tall panel was chosen (10" x 20"). Warm colors and Jody's Edgy Impressionistic painting style make this piece unique and intriguing. 10"x20" Oil on Panel
These solid looking rock out-croppings provide a perfect growing environment for tree seedlings. As they grow, their roots push deeper and deeper into the cracks, providing a solid anchor for the giant trees they will become someday. Rocks also soak up warmth from the winter sun, providing a warm spot on cold winter days. 24"x18" Oil on Panel
Resilient trees find a way to survive in the shallow channels of these undulating hills. They seek out and preserve the sparse moisture that gravitates toward lower ground. Nature’s magnificent balancing act in action. 24"x26" Oil on Panel

This charming scene presented itself late one afternoon as I was taking the long way home on a winding, dirt back road in Ridgway, Colorado. The sun was rapidly setting, so I had to settle for a photograph. 18"x30" Oil on Panel/Available $1800
When peach trees bloom, they all do it at the same time, blanketing this cozy valley in vibrant color. Looks like a bumper crop – barring a late frost.
The blazing morning sun offers a wake up call to all the hardy birds and critters that thrive in this harsh winter environment. It’s just another day for them as they forage for edible tidbits in the bare dirt under stately pine trees. It’s all in perfect balance.
Surviving the harshest conditions on the Grand Mesa in Western Colorado, these ancient survivors have seen many seasons together. The serenity of this magnificent meadow is breathtaking.

My favorite little pond on Colorado's Grand Mesa is in constant transition. No longer Summer, not quite Winter, the stately pines are the only constant ... always green. This painting was chosen for the 2018 Colorado Governor's show. 18"x14" Oil on Panel/Available
A bright morning sun shining through this thicket of Junipers created fascinating patterns that cried out to be painted.
The Colorado National Monument presents dynamic paintable subject matter at every bend in the trail. 12"x16" Oil on Panel/Available $800
On especially cold days, frost builds up on bare tree branches giving the illusion of gray foliage. It is truly a magical wonderland for a short time. As soon as the sun comes out, it melts.
The tops of red bushes peek through the snow adding a splash of color to this blue day, but sunny day. It doesn’t feel cold because the humidity is so low. 14"x22" Oil on Panel/Available $1300
We were following a small animal trail along the West rim of Ute Canyon, climbing over dead trees and ducking under low hanging tree limbs.when this scene suddenly emerged. Just what we were hoping for ... a spectacular scene off the beaten path ... and just enough sunlight left to capture the mood.
The tall mature trees and large body of marshy water provide a perfect habitat for Bald Eagles. They build their nests high in the tree tops, giving them excellent visibility of their domain and plenty of distance from human intruders. 14"x22" Oil on Panel
It is warm, sunny and mesmerizing at this moment … but an hour from now it could all change. Change is what keeps life interesting. Anticipating change keeps us on our toes.
There is so much to do here it is hard to decide where to start. You could wade in the shallow little pond and watch tiny fish scuttle around at your feet, or go right to the cool woods in hopes of spotting a snoozing elk or move across the open meadow to see what beautiful surprises await around the next corner. You could do them all in this land where time stands still.
A moody sky and burgundy leaves confirm that fall showers will give way to snow shortly. The wildlife in this high country meadow made plans a long time ago. Now they huddle in warm homes and wait for winter's blanket of white snow. 22"x28" Oil on Panel
