"Wildflowers", Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

Wildflowers

My Dad recently passed away and in moving through and navigating this difficult season, I have to say that I’ve learned many lessons. This painting was inspired by one of those lessons and I'd like to share with you what I learned. Kindness. Plain, simple, kindness.

I know, we talk about it all the time. We even wear shirts saying “Be Kind” or “Kindness Matters”. But do we really walk the talk. Is kindness and the idea of it something we feel in our hearts and in the depths of our souls? Is kindness just a passing thought or a “nice” idea? How often do we meditate on it? Well, I have been thinking about it. A lot.

Have you considered the person that just “cut in front of you” on the highway? Maybe, just maybe, it was a single mother, late to work because her baby was sick. Maybe she was on the verge of losing her job because this was the second time in two weeks she was late and she has no support system. No close family or friends who can help her out during this difficult time with her sick child. Consider the man who bumped into you at the grocery store and didn’t make eye contact or say “excuse me”. He was in a daze and he should "watch what he's doing". Could it be that he is buying groceries to carry home to his spouse who is dealing with a terrible disease? Maybe someone you work with “blows up for no reason”. Maybe privately, they are waiting on test results to confirm a diagnosis that they never expected. A diagnosis that could turn his life upside down and affect his family in a devastating way.
My point is, everyone truly is fighting a battle. Instead of grumbling or passing judgement, we could just show people some grace and give them a break. We could take it one step further and offer a smile or open the door for someone. Instead of just saying “call me if you need anything”, actually take it a step further. Come over and sit with them and talk to them, listen to them, cry with them. Offer to watch the kids for an hour so Mom can run an important errand and not have to worry about getting the kids out. Cook a meal or bring a gift card for pizza for someone who is not able to do it. Visit a nursing home. Simply just smile, make eye contact with someone, start a casual conversation…put your phone down and be in the moment with someone. These are some of the things I intend to do in the future for hurting people. I won’t always get it right, I know this...I seldom get it right. But I am grateful for the lesson and I will do my best to honor this lesson while I’m here. Because kindness really, really does matter.

This painting will be available at Art in the Park in Parker, Colorado on August 24th.  I would love it if you could stop by and say hello!  And remember, stay kind!

"Poppies and Hills" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Yes, here are more poppies, but these are painted directly onto the glass and the framing technique I use gives them dimensional aspects not usually seen in paintings on canvas.  These actually look three dimensional from some angles.  Always playing around with the glass paints and having a blast doing so!

"Poppies and Hills", 5"x7" painting on glass (measured edge to edge glass) in frame shown, $125 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, click button below or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Wild Red Flowers" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

I haven't painted in almost three weeks now, due to a nasty fall down some wooden stairs.  I still have a very swollen jammed finger on my right hand and it's slowed me down mightily, even in typing.  So no blogs, either.  I've been getting restless, so thought this painting would fill in the gap for now.  Hope you enjoy the view!

KMD2989 Wildflower Medley by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7, oil, landscape, wildflowers)

I have another plethora of pictures from Crested Butte taken last month when the wildflowers were at thier peak. Every hillside was an array of either purples or yellows and a feast for the eyes. This scene was on the road between the town of Crested Butte and the ski area. My friend Pat and I spent quite a bit of time trying to capture every square inch of this scene on our cameras!

KM2985 by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (16x8 oil painting on linen, floral)

This floral was created to hang in my show last month as one in a series of 3 florals in the strong vertical format which gives some interesting and new compositional approaches. I love capturing a moment in time when photographing close up giving such importance to just one or two flowers as opposed to a landscape. Be on the look out for a new series from my trip last week to Crested Butte, Colorado where I spent 4 days photographing perhaps every flower blooming there!

"Spring in Colorado, Shooting Stars" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Finally!  It has been forever since I have blogged, due to neck and arm problems, along with failing computer issues.  So, back to it, already!  These are my sweet shooting stars that will bloom shortly in our back yard.  I first saw these magnificent wildflowers hiking in the foothills and mountains many years ago and at that time I had no idea that you could purchase them at a nursery or garden store.  Well, I'm glad I discovered this, as they will cheer up any day here in northern Colorado.  Happy Spring!

KMD2883 Lush July by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 original oil landscape, Colorado vista)

As I am getting back to doing the smaller daily paintings I am going through my plethora of photographs from years past. There are so many fun paintings to be done from all the travels I have photographed that it is hard to choose. As spring seems so late this year I am sure I responded to the intense color and beauty of this scene near Gothic outside of Crested Butte during the wildflower season. Sometimes I wonder if anyone who has not seen this scene can believe it is really this colorful, but indeed it is.

KM2875 Rising Star by Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (48x36, oil, floral landscape)

This painting is one I have wanted to do for a couple of years. The scene is from a trip to Crested Butte, Colorado during their wildflower season in July. It is magnificent and hard to believe the feast before your eyes see in the varieties of flowers, colors and subjects to photograph and paint. When I saw this through the lens of my camera I knew it would one day be a painting.

“May Flowers”
5” x 7”
Original Pastel Painting by Colorado Artist Margretta S. Perry
$85.00 + Shipping

This little painting is another of a series of paintings done from an early spring photo with leafless trees. I have had great fun envisioning this location in spring and summer regalia! This painting has a larger tree and more wildflowers blanketing the foreground.  I used Wallis sanded paper as the ground and a mix of soft pastels. This painting is matted and framed, ready for hanging on a small wall or in a larger grouping.

Susan Spohn --- "Yes, Dear"

Another Goose and Floral Painting....

"Yes, Dear."
7 x 5
oil on board
Today's painting takes place once again near some wild sunflowers on Sands Lake. Another couple of geese stroll into the scene.... One goose is yammering at the other goose continually, .... and thus the title for this painting, " Yes, Dear".  I have taken a lot of geese reference photos from Sands Lake, so this series could continue all winter..... or not; I am interested in some different subjects too. But these geese paintings and wildflowers are pretty fun. This painting is for sale for $55.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA. Now how can you pass this one up? Susan Spohn --- Just You and Me Babe!

A new twist on my small floral series---

Just You & Me Babe
7 x 5
oil on board
I wanted to paint these wild sunflowers that grow around Sands Lake, near town here in Salida. But felt they would be too lonely without the geese that inhabit this lake... and so I added a couple to keep the flowers company. Conversations around a wild sunflower plant, I can hear them saying, "Well, it's just you and me, babe.... what now?" This painting is for sale for $55.00 and includes free shipping. Susan Spohn -- Fall Poppies

More small florals....

Fall Poppies
5 x 7
Oil on Board
Looking for more floral subjects, I walked about town this morning hunting for a few remaining blooms.... Frosty nights have turned most flowers crispy and brown or wilted by the cold. But I did find these bright red poppies, their flower petals still waving in the wind, although their coloring was a bit darker. This painting is for sale for $55.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA. Click the PayPal icon on my blog to purchase, or contact me by e-mail to arrange for other payment options.

Wildflower Field by Pam Holnback

Wildflower Field
11" x 14" Oil
$245.00 + $10. s/h

While many parts of the country have had heat and little rain this summer,  Colorado has been lucky.  In certain parts of the state we've had more than the usual growth of wild flowers due to frequent rains.

"Blue Columbine #3" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 5" x 7", $125.-
Blue Columbine #1
Oil on archival board, 6" x 6", $125.-
I just finished the third little painting in my Blue Columbine series, at the top. I like to paint in a series and sometimes arrange the paintings so that they relate to each other. It gives me a chance to explore the subjects a little bit closer and, suddenly, there is a story. This is the story of a wonderful July weekend in Grand County, Colorado. The wildflowers were especially abundant after all the spring rains.

"Cornflowers" by Annie O'Brien Gonzales

Well one thing about all of this rain is the bounty of wildflowers it is producing! I'm loving it! This 12"x12" oil painting is all about the profusion of wildflowers which are popping out all over my yard. To see more paintings, check out my website: http://www.annieobriengonzales.com
