One day, as I was out hunting for images that might may good paintings, I spied this small little finch perched  on a wire. It looked at me, just before it flew away, giving me a chance to click off a quick shot. Complementary colours blue and orange give this painting spice, while directional strokes direct the eye around and through the painting.

Field Sparrow by Kate Dardine

A tiny sparrow grips a branch, while the winds of an early spring storms buffet her. 8x8 oil on gallery wrapped canvas with painted edges.

Plain brown sparrows often go unnoticed as we go about our daily lives. But just about anywhere you are, city, suburbs, country - you'll find many varieties. I think this is a field sparrow.

I found these interesting facts on http://identify.whatbird.com.

• The Field Sparrow when frightened does not retreat to the cover of foliage, as does the Song Sparrow, but flies to an exposed position on top of bush or low tree, where it can watch and await developments.
• They often feeds directly on fallen seeds. It may fly to the top of grass stalks, let its weight carry the stems to the ground, and then begin removing the seed.
• A group of field sparrows are collectively known as a "crue" of sparrows.
