"Impromptu Ballerina Rose Bouquet" by Karla Nolan, 14"x11" unframed palette knife oil painting

I studied oil painting with Daniel Edmondson some time ago, a marvelous teacher and fine person.  He paints the most beautiful still life paintings, something I never felt I could even approach with a brush or palette knife.  I was inspired, however, more than I knew, to attempt a more "rugged" or less refined painting recently, with the thought of the pink ballerina rose bush planted in front of our house as the subject matter.  Dan has a more representational approach and I just tend to abstract my realism, as you can see!  (I might add here, he teaches some amazing painting classes via DVDs, you might want to check into these....he's on Facebook with more information....)

Another ballet painting! I have been timing myself to paint only 30 minutes per painting today. I worked on four different ballet paintings, and found it to be quite effective. Why? not sure, maybe it was because I felt the need to get the important things down first, and not be, couldn't be concerned with any detail at all. I'm going to do this exercise more often. I am quite happy with the results. Whe I spend more time on a painting, I begin getting "picky" and it begins to feel tight and contrived, everything opposite as to what I am trying to convey. Another ballet painting of Emma, this time from behind. This weekend I will be doing a short demo on my ballet paintings, so I'm practising this week! Although, taking a break, I will be doing a John David Phillips landscape workshop all day today and then it's back to the ballet!

The warm light shining streaming through my windows, created a very dramatic effect on Emma in her ballet dress. Because it is back lit, I was able to leave out face detail, and still look natural. Yesterday, I won a couple of ribbons at a local art show in Colorado, I placed 2nd and honorable mention, which is always a happy moment!

The little ballerinas are so cute, despite all their "mistakes" during their dance performances, isn't that what we LOVE to see?! It's true, it is the sweetest thing to see the little girls trying to do their best, but not following the dance steps as laid out in all the long hours of rehersal. How is it that we lose that and strive towards that sense of perfection? How often do our mistakes lead to something greater than what we tried to plan out? Today I say, "Let go of perfection and have fun!" (Maybe tomorrow I'll strive for perfection.)

This 16 year old ballerina was our subject for a quick draw/paint session and what a fantastic model. She had never modeled before and didn't realize what a wonderful job she was doing.
