"Near Najac, France" by Karla Nolan, watercolor painting (unmatted)
It was May of 2013, a very difficult time in life as my father had passed away. We escaped to France. May is poppy month and we were fortunate enough to be able to view the many coquelicot fields around this little village, Najac. Seeing these happy hills of red soothed my shattered nerves a bit. Looking back, I recall the emotions of losing a beloved person, those feelings never leave. But France helped.

"Italy: Cypress and Poppies" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting
Fond memories of Italy again, irresistible! I cannot speak the Italian language except for basic phrases (grazie, prego, bellissima) and, while I can remember an occasional phrase for a short while, I have all but given up learning this Latin based lingo. However, my friend Patrizia is encouraging me to learn a bit more and I'm enjoying a book or two written by Tim Parks (an English gentleman who has lived and worked in Italy for 30 years) in which I can pick up a phrase here and there. The moral of this story: (1) never give up on learning something new and (2) visit Italy, for goodness sakes, do you know what you are missing?

Giving
a painting a title can be a tedious event. I mean, let's face, have I
not painted more than a couple of poppy paintings? I was straining my
brain today to give this post a proper name and then I thought of how my
cat, as a kitten, used to pounce on everything! I could just see him
pouncing on these poppies (aka papaveri, coquelicot)! Hence, voila, the
name of this painting was born!

"Windswept Indian Paintbrush" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass
Oops, at it again, I guess, that painting on glass and all! This is my take on the famous Indian Paintbrush flowers, a flowering plant indigenous to the western U.S., always a delight to see blooming alongside the road, on hikes, climbing up a mountain....I've seen them recently in Colorado and Wyoming and they occur in varying colors, primarily red but sometimes with an orange hue.

"Pink Water Lily", original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan
We live in what I call "a little slice of Paradise", Fort Collins, Colorado. This sweet town has all sorts of horticultural delights including a huge test garden, Colorado State University Horticultural Department, multitudes of greenhouses and gardens. But one of my favorite spots to visit is The Gardens on Spring Creek, less than two miles from our house. This past summer I did a solo tour through the Gardens and found this sweet pink water lily, just floating along. Here it is for you to ponder. I enjoyed painting it and learned a few lessons about watercolor painting as the painting progressed. It is one tough medium!

We
were in northern California recently, specifically Sonoma. What a
sweet town, you should visit it, really! I slid into the alley off the
main square and returned to see the bouganvillea I saw a few years
back. Still blooming away, still impossible to paint, but easy to
photograph. So, my approach here is catch the color.....that's what
it's all about, isn't it? "Life is short, use color!" is my motto.

"Echinacea Quintet, Cheyenne Spirit", 7"x8" original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan
The end of summer/beginning of fall is an adventure in the flower garden. I saw this Cheyenne Spirit echinacea at
nearby Gardens On Spring Creek, an horticultural paradise in the center
of Fort Collins, Colorado (which is the home of Colorado State
University, known for the horticultural program at the college). Every
time I visit the Gardens I am inspired to paint and plant more. We have
many sorts of flowers in our own garden but it's hard to believe that
so many other varieties would also grow for us. It's change from sunny
to shady in the back yard, the growth of the trees and bushes has been
rampant but I have the great fortune of being able to walk through
Spring Creek and learn even more about the floral kingdom. So lucky!

watercolor painting has multiple layers of colors on it, tons of
flowers, too! Just imagine how active it must be for a flower to emerge
from the earth, other plants surrounding it, blue skies overhead. May
is just the best time for the European poppies in France and Italy and
we are delighted to have all different sorts in our own garden during
