Artist Susan Spohn - Chicken Hearted, original small oil painting

Chicken Hearted
6x6 inches, original oil
A light-hearted look at the world of chickens. When I drew these chickens out on my panel, they formed a heart shape in my mind. I merely reinforced this idea with the background. Lots of texture on this painting. This is day 9 in the painting challenge. You can purchase this painting for $50.00 starting tomorrow from my website: SpohnStudio.com

$40.00 plus $5.00 shipping, Framed price is $85.00
I just love little chicks! Who can resist them? So soft and roundish, peeping and running about, they are just amazing. Today's little yellow chick was caught posing by itself away from its brother's and sisters. Perhaps tomorrow I will try a for a group of chicks....... "Chick #8" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on Gessobord., 5" x 5", $110.-
I love chicks and birds in general. Nothing says Spring more than chicks and baby birds. They are beautiful and full of personality, even when they are just 2 days old, like this little one, when I took the photo. Our friends Michelle and Tim had just gotten an order of 30 chicks in the mail to start their little family farm, and I was happy to be invited to photograph them.

Susan Spohn --- Barnyard Scene

Barnyard Scene

Barnyard Scene
12 x 12
Oil on Paper and Board
Here is another experiment with oil on paper and board in a more realistic manner. Again you can see all the under lying texture created by using the paper. And you can see where pieces of the paper show through the oil paint. I am on the fence as to whether or not this really works with this painting. But it turned out to be a cute scene with all the chickens and the sheep. The reference photo of the sheep was the main inspiration for this painting, the chickens were just support players.  This painting is for sale for $150.00.  Visit my blog to purchase this painting or to view other paintings: susanmspohn.blogspot.com

Contemporary Still Life by Paula Peacock

'Why the Chicken REALLY Crossed the Road'
12" x 24"
Oil on Canvas

I often say that I don't choose the subjects I paint, they choose me. While browsing through a local flea market, the little chicken sugar and creamer set caught my eye and for some goofy reason unknown to me, I was transfixed. They begged to be bought and at 99 cents I couldn't refuse. I love pairing unusual objects with each other. Add a little whimsy and I'm right at home with the composition.

Kauai Rooster Quartet #2 by Astrid Paustian

Kauai Roosters #6,#7,#8,and #9, details, 12" x 12" each, to be mounted on a 30" x 30 canvas.
I have been working on a larger version of my Kauai Rooster Quartet for an upcoming exhibit. Photographing these paintings has been a challenge, so I decided to put them directly on my scanner, which left me with details.
Still having fun with the roosters we encountered during our vacation in Kauai earlier this year!

"Kauai Rooster Quartet" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on board, 4 images, 5" x 5" each, mounted on a 2" deep, gallery wrapped, painted canvas, $375.-
I finally put the boys together on one canvas. The paintings were inspired by our trip to Kauai in May, where the beautiful roosters and chickens are abundant, and noisy, crowing at all times of the day and night.

"Kauai Rooster #3" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on board, 5" x 5", $85.-
Here in another one of the roosters I painted this week. I have always enjoyed painting chickens, and our trip to Kauai a few weeks ago provided me with many wonderful reference photos. The roosters, hens and chicks were everywhere and a very colorful sight. I was also impressed with the hens, devoted to their chicks and raising them under insane conditions, by the side of the road, on parking lots and golf courses.

"Kauai Rooster #2" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on board, 5" x 5", $85.-
I have also been painting chickens this week. I took many photos of these beautiful birds during our recent vacation in Kauai. It was easy, because they were everywhere!
I will paint some larger versions of these roosters as well, on 12" x 12" canvas.

"Pearl" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on canvas, 12" x 9", $325.-
With the Easter holiday just around the corner, chicks and chickens are on my mind.
I love this time of year and Easter has always been a wonderful celebration of Spring at our home, with a big Easter egg hunt, and the laughter of delighted children in our large backyard.
Pearl is a happy chicken. Hand raised, free range and hand fed, she is loved by her whole family, our neighbors.

Painting continues around the 2 " deep edges.
Another one of my chick paintings. There are 7 so far and there will be many more.
Still fascinated by these little creatures, only 2 days old with lots of personality and attitude. I think I will call the series "Chicks with Attitudes".

"Curious" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, painted around the 2" deep edges, $85.
Spring is here and the chicks have arrived at the feed stores. I have to resist the urge to go and bring some of them home. We're not ready yet for our own chicken coop. Next year, hopefully.
This is one of the 2 day old chicks that arrived in the mail one day at our friends Michelle and Tim's little family farm in Longmont. It is grown now, well cared for and loved by the whole family in return for some delicious eggs.
The painting is one of a series of chick paintings and currently hangs at the Art Center of Estes Park during my exhibit.

Kauai Rooster by Mary Landis #7709

Oil on canvas
size:9X12
price: $$150
S&H: $11
This Kauai Rooster was a proud specimen and just knew I wanted to paint him; of course I had to request his permission for a photo. These roosters and chickens run rampant on the Hawaiian island of Kauai and are known to be quite a nuisance, especially on the golf courses.
