Three Zinnias, original small oil painting by artist Susan Spohn

3 Zinnias, oil, 6x6

I planted a  wild mix of zinnia colors this year. Their petals appeared a solid color, but when in the sun they turned to additional orange, yellow and blue tints. This small oil is available on my ETSY site. Visit my website to view more paintings. SpohnStudio.com

Visiting Alpaca Farms

I have seen Alpacas from a distance. There are several farms/ranches in the area that have herds of Alpacas. But I have not seen them up close until a couple Sunday's ago. A friend and I went to visit this small farm that raised primarily Alpacas. I was fortunate to take quite a few photos. Here is my first attempt to paint one. I painted it as a birthday card the friend who accompanied me to the farm.

Trying out a new painting knife.

It is always nice to buy new art supplies. Some are necessities and others are bought on a whim. Lately, I find myself limiting my purchases. Squeezing the last dab of oil paint out of a tube, or still using a brush when clearly the bristles have worn down to the nub. But I also like to buy a new brush or especially a new painting knife.

Flower Shop Flower Stalks
6x6, original oil
Today's painting was inspired by a bunch of flowers in a floral shop. Their were many varieties all kept in large clear glass vases. The tall stalks of the mostly leafless stems really stood out and made the flowers seem larger. To purchase this painting, visit my website:  SpohnStudio.com
I painted most of this painting with my newest painting knife. It has a lot of cool edges, and inspires me to keep things simple. Photo of it below.

Words are Words, but Cats are Everything, original acrylic painting by Susan Spohn

Words are Words, but Cats are Everything
original acrylic painting

This is my painting that will be entered into our local library show that will run from May 12 thru June. The show is called Letters, Unfettered. We needed to incorporate an alphabet that was not English or Latin based. My words are written in Telugu. I like the scroll of the letters, heart shapes and vine-like qualities. This painting was an experiment in low color and white tones also. Visit my website for more information: SpohnStudio.com
