Visiting Alpaca Farms

I have seen Alpacas from a distance. There are several farms/ranches in the area that have herds of Alpacas. But I have not seen them up close until a couple Sunday's ago. A friend and I went to visit this small farm that raised primarily Alpacas. I was fortunate to take quite a few photos. Here is my first attempt to paint one. I painted it as a birthday card the friend who accompanied me to the farm.

And here is the second painting of a black bear. The reference photo was interesting as it was wooded with some fall color in the under bush. I like this variety of black bear since it has a brownish muzzle, I was looking at photos of some other black bears and they were all black, and would not have been quite as much fun to paint as those with a little variety in their fur. Getting into the holiday spirit, I started my painting with a cat reference photo and the background was very similar in color to the cat. I liked this idea but wanted to do more with it. This basket full of wrapping papers and some Christmas ornaments was just the subtle theme I was looking for to incorporate with this cute tawny cat. I really like how the floral background adds lots of pattern as do the wrapping papers and the basket, not to mention the striping on the cat! This patterning makes the painting very active, and at the same time helps your eye to rest on the cat and the quiet soft yellow wrapping paper.
