Susan Spohn - 30 day Painting Challenge

Here are the results of the 30 day painting challenge. The first collage has 25 of the paintings and the bottom one has the remaining 5 images. They are not in the order I painted them, but randomly chosen to form a collage. Each painting is an original oil painting, 6x6 inches, some are sold already. Day 5 of the painting challenge. I chose to paint this cat today because of the floral print on chair she was sitting on. She has so much fur and texture and then there was the floral design behind her to keep your eye moving. I painted Willow  mainly with painting knives which gave her fur all that texture. With the warm winds blowing summer ever closer, I looked through my reference photos and came upon these two cats, basking in the sunlight and half hidden by the flowers in their favorite garden.  This seemed the perfect painting to paint today. Getting into the holiday spirit, I started my painting with a cat reference photo and the background was very similar in color to the cat. I liked this idea but wanted to do more with it. This basket full of wrapping papers and some Christmas ornaments was just the subtle theme I was looking for to incorporate with this cute tawny cat. I really like how the floral background adds lots of pattern as do the wrapping papers and the basket, not to mention the striping on the cat! This patterning makes the painting very active, and at the same time helps your eye to rest on the cat and the quiet soft yellow wrapping paper.

Our local art guild, Salida ArtWorks had its annual art show reception this evening for its Valley Visions Art Show held at the Steamplant Paquette Gallery and Anex Deislin Gallery. It was fun; lots of folks showed up, and it was great to mix and mingle. Wonderful musical entertainment, great appetizers, and a wide assortment of art that came together in a magical mix. This show is open to everyone, but members pay a reduced entry fee.

My boyfriend, Ralph, won a business award for his stained glass window, my good friend Padgett won a People's Choice award for her new mixed media painting, and I sold my oil painting! (Beyond the Garden) So a very successful evening!

I had painted this piece especially for this show, so it was wonderful to see it sell at this show.

I needed a new wonderful painting to put into one of our local shows, Valley Visions, and with other shows, studio tours, and just general busyness I hadn't gotten around to painting my piece yet. Well, the deadline for the application was looming and I knew the flowers I wanted to paint, but little else. Then  a friend posted a haiku with a photo of her cat on a rock looking for mice in some rabbit-bush and I knew that idea of a cat in the background was what I needed for my upcoming painting. I am being drawn more and more towards creating a story with my paintings. This piece certainly qualifies. This painting will be for sale at the Salida ArtWorks Valley Vision Art Show in October. The strong sunlight on Scruffy's fur almost made him disappear into the background of the wall, but then you get a sense of him with his head shadowed a bit as he looked into the camera. Even though he has pink ears and lots of pastel colors in his fur, I think his facial expression gives him the look of a Tom cat, sun bathing in his favorite spot.
