Those of you following my blog know that I painted this scene in Kevin Weckbach's class using only Windsor Violet and Windsor Yellow.  Here is the same scene using my full pallet.

Yesterday marked the half way point through his class.  I am enjoying painting again!!!!!  We're off for 3 weeks, then back at it.

Boston Harbor Boats - Original 8 by 10 inch Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Boston Harbor Boats  - 8 by 10 inch original oil painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein.

This was painted in Kevin Weckbach's class a few weeks ago.  The visual approach is light and shadow.  It is one of the paintings of mine he critiqued and one of four selected as studies that I can paint on a 24 x 30 canvas the last three weeks of class.

Color Theory - Water Taxi - Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Water Taxi - 8 by 10 inch original oil painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein.

Color theory was covered in Kevin's class last month.  One of the exercises involved painting with two complementary pigments plus white.  We had to stay true to value, temperature and chroma throughout the painting. I chose the yellow-purple complement and used Windsor Yellow and Windsor Violet.  We all learned a tremendous amount about color mixing.

A second exercise was to choose one of the triads and complete a painting.  The final exercise was use color as a visual approach - the whole painting must appear to be the color you choose from a distance. So, if you pick green as a visual approach, red brick first has to appear as a version of green before reading "red brick".  Unfortunately the linen on my canvas buckled.  I started over at home but have not finished the painting.  I will finish and post it over the next couple of weeks.

Our homework over the past month has been to complete 8 small studies.  Kevin is critiquing them in class (what a learning experience that is!) and beginning in April will help us translate the study to a large painting (one side must be at least 30 inches long).

I can't believe that the first 6 months of the class is drawing to a close.  Half of the class has chosen to go on.  Many of the rest want to take the summer off and then resume in the fall.  I've chosen to go on.

Red Barn in Snow - Original Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Red Barn in Snow - 8 X 10 inch original oil painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein.

This is another example of local tone as a visual approach.  Kevin has asked us to complete 8 paintings in the next 6 weeks.  He will then help us to select one of them to paint "large" on a canvas at least 30 inches long on one of the sides.

Last week we started color theory.  I will post about that later this week.

7/26 - Original Abstract Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

16 by 20 inch original mixed media abstract painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein
I never like to name abstract paintings because everyone sees something different in them.  There are ranges of beautiful grays and blues in both the dark and light areas of this painting.

September Light - SOLD - Original Colorado Landscape Painting by Carol Hein

Fall is my favorite time of year. The light in Colorado pours from the sky, shadows lengthen and colors seem to vibrate. I stumbled upon this beautiful little farm about a year ago ago and returned last September with a group of plein air painters. It has been abandoned but the Colorado Historical Society is in the process of restoring it.

This painting is sold but you may purchase a high quality print.

Timed Figurative Study, Figurative Art, Original 9 by 12 Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Here is another painting from the figurative class I've been taking with Kim English. This was a 20 minute pose. Visit my website carolhein.com

Abstracted Koi Pond, 6 by 6 Original Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

I usually don't do abstract paintings but thought I'd give it a try for two reasons: My friends who do specialize in abstract work always look like they are having so much fun and I had paint on my pallet that needed to be used up. Next week I am having reconstructive hand surgery - yep, you guessed it - on my right hand and have been forbidden from painting for a minimum of two months. Although, I may attempt to paint with just my left hand. Should be looser, right. This unframed abstract is for sale for $50. Back Alley Spring, Western Art, Western Landscape Paintings, Colorado Artist carol Hein

After the snow storm we had over the weekend I am thinking SPRING. I found this picture taken on a trip to Santa Fe a few years ago. Somehow painting it just made me feel happy. It goes to a show at the county justice center tomorrow. To purchase contact Carol at carolhein@sbcglobal.net Visit my website carolhein.com

3 Minute Study, Figurative Art, Figurative Paintings, Colorado Artist Carol Hein

One of my goals this year is to loosen up. To help accomplish that goal I began studying with Kim English at the Art Student's League. In each class we warm up with a series of 3 minute paintings. Each week I will keep one of the poses (we do at least 30 paintings a week) and post it here so that you can follow the journey with me. Please feel free to offer critiques and encouragement as we go along. These studies are not for sale because I want to be able to look back at the semester and, hopefully track progress to my goal.
