Little House at the End of the Field, 5.5x8, Original Oil Painting, Unframed, $75 includes shipping. Sometimes you just need to shake it up a little. I was getting pretty tired of still lifes and needed to get outside and give plein air another try. I had so much fun with this one. Could it be that all that squinting at tomatos and oranges helped me out with my nemesis...plein air? I think the red underpainting might have given it a little boost. I'll try it again with a white canvas and see what I can do.

Crossed Sabers Ranch barn by Kate Dardine

I've been working on this painting for a couple of weeks...started out with a much more complicated composition but kept simplifying, getting to the essentials of what this painting is about - a beautiful round barn set in a gorgeous landscape in northeastern Oregon. As I was painting it, I felt a sense of the barn being on hallowed ground. Something about the shape of the barn, and the white cross bars on the hayloft door, remind me of a church. I guess to me, Spirit can be found here in the silence. Perhaps the only sound is the breath of wind rustling the drying grasses of late summer as a cloud builds with afternoon moisture.

The barn is on the Crossed Sabers Ranch, just off the road to Imnaha, outside of Joseph, Oregon. As soon as it is dry enough, I'll sign it and do a preliminary varnish (with retouch varnish) and ship it up to my gallery in Joseph - Kelly's Gallery on Main Street.
