One morning on Maui I painted in a small orchard where there were also numerous flowers.  We all become familiar with our own environment.  My environment, Colorado, of course doesn't have tropical plants or flowers.  I loved all the hibiscus blooming everywhere...I didn't even know the name of this flower before this trip!

Relaxing with some tropical flower studies while preparing for 3 holiday shows and another one to follow in 3 weeks. It is a special treat to paint tropical flowers and look through reference materials from exotic destinations while the weather has turned quite cold and wintry outside here in Colorado.

"Hibiscus" by Astrid Paustian

I was painting Hibiscus last week in preparation for a large tropical flower painting.
I found it a little difficult without any live plants to observe or photograph, instead relying on friends to forward me some of their photos. It was comforting though, to paint tropical plants and remembering our wonderful vacation to Kauai last May, while watching it snow outside.
