"Wild Rose" by Astrid Paustian
Oil on Gessobord, 5" x 7", $125.-
Small flower and bird studies are a wonderful way for me to relax and meditate. I usually work from my own photographs. This one was taken during the early summer in out beautiful Xeric garden. The roses bloomed in gorgeous shades of yellow, orange and red, and they are relatively drought tolerant. This dry summer everything has been needing a little extra water, of course.

Another one of my new orchid paintings. What gorgeous flowers! I am preparing some orchid paintings for our next show at the Art Center of Estes Park in February and March. I bought this plant at a local supermarket 3 months ago and it has been a great joy to observe and paint during these winter months.

"Hibiscus #2" by Astrid Paustian
Oil on Gessobord, 6" x 6", $95.-
Relaxing with some tropical flower studies while preparing for 3 holiday shows and another one to follow in 3 weeks. It is a special treat to paint tropical flowers and look through reference materials from exotic destinations while the weather has turned quite cold and wintry outside here in Colorado.

"Hibiscus" by Astrid Paustian
Oil on panel, 8" x 8", $ 175.-
I was painting Hibiscus last week in preparation for a large tropical flower painting.
I found it a little difficult without any live plants to observe or photograph, instead relying on friends to forward me some of their photos. It was comforting though, to paint tropical plants and remembering our wonderful vacation to Kauai last May, while watching it snow outside.

I am still having fun with poppies. This is yesterday's painting. I am going to work on it a little more, softening edges here and there and adding some blues to the background. I love the light shining through the petals of these beautiful flowers!

Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 8" x 8",
paintings continue around the 2" deep edges.
$175.- each, or 3 for $425.-
Tulips are starting to bloom in our garden. They are among my favorite flowers, especially the apricot colored and multi-colored varieties. I love the way the light shines through the beautiful but hardy petals. Also, I am always amazed with their resilience, adapting successfully to all kinds of springtime weather conditions.
