As I sat around at an art show this weekend, looking at my own work, it dawned on me that this painting could be a horizontal, as well as a vertical presentation.

As a matter of fact, I like it BETTER as a horizontal.  I had to do a little tweeking, however.
Here's the original vertical format:

                       

 

You can see, all I did was add 5 green Egyptian papyrus leaves, and some green squiggly lines.

I am currently working on a larger, 30" x 30" version of this painting, after finishing a 36" x 36" hibiscus painting for a client( not yet photographed).
I continue to enjoy painting tropical flowers during this long, cold and windy Colorado winter, happily remembering our vacation on Kauai last April, where the reference photos were taken.

"White Orchids #2" by Astrid Paustian

Another one of my new orchid paintings. What gorgeous flowers! I am preparing some orchid paintings for our next show at the Art Center of Estes Park in February and March. I bought this plant at a local supermarket 3 months ago and it has been a great joy to observe and paint during these winter months.

So many beautiful flowers and trees. So many new subjects to explore. And now, our local flowers are beginning to bloom in large numbers, Iris and Poppies among my favorite ones. So much to paint. What a wonderful season!

"Bird of Paradise" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on "Gatorbord", 5" x 5", $85.-
This is one of the tropical flower paintings I have been working on since we returned from beautiful Kauai last week. I am especially fond of the Bird of Paradise, with it's vibrant colors and dynamic lines. I am experimenting with oils and watercolors on different surfaces, and it is a lot of fun!
