For the color palette, I chose the warm golds and reds of the Southwest, along with prominent turquoise and green in the focal area. The painting measures 12"x12". This painting evolved very quickly - I love it when that happens. I had a painting on a textured canvas that was not working, so I stopped trying to “fix it.” With new abandon, and a big brush, I just started layering color over the previous work. Very quickly, it seemed, this new composition came into view. I worked all day and evening on it. The next day I did some fine tweaking, and - voila! - a new painting was born.

Abstract Mixed Media Painting "Rocky Ridge" by Colorado Artist Carol Nelson

This unique mixed media painting is striking in its dramatic format - a LONG, NARROW painting. As such, it fits in a lot of places in the home that are too narrow for most works. It is painted on a piece of MDF trim board, and backed with an oak board. The smaller oak board gives stability and also makes the painting stand out from the wall about 0.5”. There is a lot of texture in this piece. The “rocks” are made from plaster of Paris and hand painted to go with the composition.
