Finished this painting today. You can see the beginning steps below in the previous blog posting. The main focus of this painting was the yarrow plant in full bloom.. and then a little mouse slipped into the back left-hand side of the painting. The Process of a New Painting...

Today I started a new painting. First I did a value study on my board. I just brushed in grey tones to lay out the general painting.

I do not often start with a value study, but this painting had a limited subject matter and really only one and 1/2 types of flowers. The painting will work or not work depending on the the values I choose and the drama.  Below you can see the start of the colorization process. I added  a mouse, (the painting was just calling out for this little guy...) Tomorrow I will finish the painting with my pallet knives.

A friend sent several photos of her cats to me today. I chose this photo since it had the best lighting and some strong shadows. I know this was one of their favorite cats, and by the soulful look in the cat's eyes, I can see why. Several hours after I painted this painting, I sold it to the owners of this cat. "Secret Friend" by Kate Dardine

Painting #13 of my Painting a Day project. The other morning I found one of these little creatures in the grain bin in my horse barn. Trying to catch him while wearing thick work gloves was like a three ring circus - or a greased pig contest. I finally got him out of the bin and he scampered off and hid in a pile of hay. 4x5", oil on stretched canvas, ready to frame.
