This painting was inspired by one of my students whom I taught for 5 years. At 13 years old, she announced to me she was gay. A year or so later she announced she was bi-sexual, then transgender/transsexual, then simply said, "it's complicated". She kept this information from her family for at least 5 years. Her teenaged angst was multiplied ten-fold while she struggled with her identity, hiding who she really was. Towards the end of our time spent together teaching and learning, she finally came out to her mother. There was an overnight change in her personality. She was relieved, happy, elated, light as a feather, sunshiny and danced on-air to name a few emotions. I thought of her as a butterfly emerging from her cocoon and was free to fly like the beautiful person she was.

She graduated high school and left for college. I miss seeing her weekly for our 2 hours of making art and talking and trying to solve the woes of the world. She's an extremely intelligent person who I know is out there somewhere taking on the world by storm.

Before this painting sold, it traveled around to a couple of museums, galleries and was favorably written about in 'American Arts Quarterly'

Due to Covid-19, I am no longer offering group classes or workshops until it's considered safe. 

No worries! I am, however, still offering one-on-one private painting lessons on Thursdays and Fridays.

This is a very thickly painted piece that I painted mainly with a pallet knife. It started off as a still life, but since one of the apples was needed for lunch, I took a quick photo and continued to paint, munching on my apple. I don't think I am meant to be a still life painter. Anyway, the 3 apples and 3 garlic cloves made a nice composition. "KITCHEN SCENE"

It felt so good to do this painting.  I have not done an oil painting yet this year, except for that manikin study a couple days ago.

Although I love acrylics, with all the fabulous mediums and effects you can achieve, there is no substitute for the luscious "paintability" of oils.  It's such fun to push the paint around.

Here we have two of my big black coffee mugs sitting on the counter with an apple and an orange - it was kind of an oval looking orange, but an orange none the less.  The warm tones and reflections inspired me.

Oh God, I'm flip flopping again.  Abstraction back to realism. Forgive me, dear readers, if you tuned in expecting to see an abstract composition.  There is one on the easel, however.  

As I was doing this painting, I was cursing my brushes.  I am the world's foremost abuser of brushes.  My acrylic brushes sit in water for weeks. As luck would have it, there is an art supply/framing store near me that is going out of business - 70% off art supplies.  I BOUGHT 26 BRUSHES!  WOO HOO. Back in business.

Apples With Wine

The solid, heavy weight of the wine bottle is what inspired me. I wanted to balance this with the soft, green and white cloths and finally, adding color with the red apples. The lighting used was the natural light that comes through my windows in the studio. Sometimes I like to use artificial lighting to cast a stronger shadow, but most often I use the natural light through the windows. I am enjoying my switch to the heavily textured jute linen for my still life's. I get to paint thick to get into the crevices of the linen cloth and like the personality this adds - plus, thick paint is fun!
