Snake Birth Totem by Kate Dardine

"The Heart of Snake" (October 23 - November 22) is the seventh in the series of twelve birth totem animal paintings that I'm currently working on. This painting was definitely a challenge - getting the drawing right, creating the illusion of roundness and the smoothness of the snake's skin. But I thoroughly enjoyed the process. Click here to see how this painting progressed from start to finish, and to learn a little about having Snake as a your birth totem. "Counting Crow" by Kate Dardine

The crow is an extremely intelligent bird, capable of analyzing situations and using tools if necessary to accomplish what it needs. In this painting I imagined the crow contemplating the significance of numbers. "Counting Crow" is a 10x10 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, $325.

The Way of Wolf by Kate Dardine

"The Way of Wolf is the Way of the World", 24x24 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Still a work in progress...stay tuned!

This poor painting has gone through numerous name changes on its journey to completion...and I'm not quite done yet! But last night I finally felt like I'd resolved the issues I was having - by going back to the original study and getting back that "out of the mist" feeling. Before I went down to my studio to paint, I watched the trailer to a documentary called Lords of Nature which talks about the role predators have in the balance of nature. So I had in my mind thoughts of how important wolves and other predators are in keeping the world in sync. Read more...

Wolf Wisdom by Kate Dardine

I've been thinking abut painting wolves for a long time, and have always had a great interest in them. I recall a time at a zoo, many, many years ago. I was looking into the wolf enclosure and had the extraordinary experience of locking eyes with a wolf. It wasn't a challenge, but rather an exchange of some deep emotion, a longing - and in some weird way it felt like recognition between us. I remember I broke gaze first, and the wolf slowly turned and walked away. I was left standing alone with a most indescribable sense of sorrow.

This painting, titled "Wolf Wisdom" is a 24x24 oil on gallery wrapped canvas and available for purchase through my website, www.KateDardine.com.

"Keeper of Medicine: The Power of One" Totem Animal painting by Kate Dardine

Native Americans believe that the Bear has strong medicine magic and many tribes consider bears to be Shaman themselves. They are known to American Indian tribes and their Shamans as “Keeper of Medicine” because they keep all the ancient healing secrets of the Indians and the spirits of the Earth. This painting is called "Keeper of Medicine: the Power of One" and is a 20x20 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. A part of my Totem Animal series, this Bear teaches that each of us carries the all the knowledge of the Universe within ourselves. "If You Can't See the Tail, You've Got to Look in the Eyes" close up detail of oil painting by Kate Dardine

This is a detail of a painting I am currently working on. The painting shows the whole wolf, but I am liking this cropped version and am thinking of doing a painting - maybe 30x30, with this crop. If you are interested in reading about my painting process, I invite you to read my online journal. You can also subscribe to my journal and have my updates delivered right to your internet home page or your email.

I also send out a roughly bi-weekly e-letter - this week I am offering a painting at a very attractive price for a limited time - but only to those who have joined my Art Tribe and signed up for Painted Wind Studio News. Click here to join the Tribe!

"Moose on the Loose" by Kate Dardine

The interesting thing about Moose, as I've discovered from encounters with the Moose in the mountains of Colorado and Yellowstone Park, is how quickly and gracefully this huge animal can move. And how silently it can pick its way through the willows - one might pass by you only a few feet away and you might never even hear it. When in the presence of Moose, one can't help but respect the power of this animal. Even so, they are a bit goofy looking!

10x10 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Available on my website for $475.
