"Cherish This Life", Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

"Cherish This Life"

We recently lost someone very special to us.  My Father-in-Law, Mikey, was Italian, to the core.  He grew up in North Denver, in what was known as little Italy.  He worked at an Italian Bakery for much of his life and he fought in WWII, in Normandy.  He knew the Italian Mob Bosses in Denver, worked hard to raise his family, and he loved to gamble in Vegas.  He was pretty good at it too. He also loved to go dancing.  He went dancing almost every Saturday night up until about 4 months ago.

I know if we could talk to him again, he would tell us to live this life and appreciate it, because it is short.  As I've said before, this life is just a whisper of time.  So this is for you, Mikey, for a life well-lived and well-loved...we will cherish you and the life you lived forever.

This piece was created as a reminder to "Cherish This Life".  It was done with many layers of paint, inks, and painted paper.  The heart in the middle was cut from a vintage ceiling tile.  When the light catches it, you can see the hints of iridescent gold paint sprinkled throughout the painting.  The words, "Cherish This Life" are embedded into the painting.  It is framed in a gold and black floater frame.

“Surrender to the Moment”, Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

Surrender to the Moment

She finds herself lost in rare, quiet, solitude. Her mind wanders, illuminated with her dreams. Almost like a field full of wildflowers, touched by the sun, swaying in the warm breeze. Grace and peace are her momentary companions. She is grateful and surrenders to this one, small, moment in time.

This piece was created with many layers of papers, inks, paint, and modeling paste. The layers create rich depth and texture. It is done on a wooden cradleboard canvas and measures 14 X 18 X 1.5".

This piece is available. I would love to hear from you - feel free to email me at:

"Peace Within", Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

 "Peace Within"

I was recently fortunate enough to host a workshop with the most fabulous artist, Jenny Grant.  http://www.flowbyjenny.com/en
I first found Jenny on Facebook a couple of years ago. Jenny is from Stockholm, Sweden.  On a whim, last year I asked her if she would come to the US and hold a workshop.  To my surprise, she said yes and was gracious enough to come to Colorado and hold a workshop on her mixed media techniques.  This painting was a result of her workshop.

Here below are some photos of how my painting progressed through the many layers.  The first pictures depict how papers, inks, and paints were layered on to this piece.

Then I added more modeling paste for texture and then more color!

After drying, we took a reference photo and proceeded to add a face.  I wanted the face to meld in with the background.

To finish off, I added some darker inks and more stamping.  She's done!  I love her.

I will be forever grateful to Jenny for coming all the way over here to teach. She is one of the most gracious, kind, compassionate people that I've ever met. What a blessing to call her "friend".

I will be holding on to this painting, but I'd love to hear from you!  You can send me an email at:  saltlightwatercolors@yahoo.com

The Return of the Shamans by Kate Dardine

This is a painting that truly took on a life of its own. I started out with the idea of a path through a wooded area. I got pretty far with the painting when I suddenly got an urge to wipe off most of what I’d painted. As I was destroying what I had been constructing for days, the thought “the return of the Shamans” was repeating in my head. When a good portion of the paint had been wiped off, what was left looked like figures on horseback. The rest of the painting fell together almost effortlessly. The mystery of this piece intrigues me. Who are the Shamans? Are they the figures on horseback? Or are the figures waiting for the Shamans to appear out of the mist? "The Return of the Shamans" is 30x40, oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Click here for purchase information.

The Way of Wolf by Kate Dardine

"The Way of Wolf is the Way of the World", 24x24 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Still a work in progress...stay tuned!

This poor painting has gone through numerous name changes on its journey to completion...and I'm not quite done yet! But last night I finally felt like I'd resolved the issues I was having - by going back to the original study and getting back that "out of the mist" feeling. Before I went down to my studio to paint, I watched the trailer to a documentary called Lords of Nature which talks about the role predators have in the balance of nature. So I had in my mind thoughts of how important wolves and other predators are in keeping the world in sync. Read more...

The Heart of Raven by Kate Dardine

This is the first in a series of birth totem animal paintings. I started with The Heart of Raven because that is my birth totem, so I figured that was a good place to start. The series will consist of twelve 10x10 paintings, and will be sold as a set. Each painting has a short poem that is relates to the animal and the person who has that animal as a birth totem. Become a fan of my public page on Facebook and get in a drawing to win a custom painted 8x8 birth totem painting. See more Totem Animal paintings on my website, www.katedardine.com. Abundance by Kate Dardine

Abundance, prosperity, standing one’s ground and protection of resources are just part of what Buffalo represents on an energy level. In Ted Andrews book Animal Speak he says in reference to Buffalo that “The Lord helps those who help themselves” and that the Lakota Sioux believed that right action combined with right prayer resulted in the manifestation of all that is wanted or needed. How many times has anyone heard that someone wants something, be it money, a new relationship, a new job, etc. and yet the person wants someone else to do it all for them! When Buffalo appears to us, it is at this time that we ourselves need to take action on our own behalf and then and only then can we provide a channel for the manifestation to flow through to us from the Universe.

"Abundance" is an 11x14 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Click here for purchase information.

"Keeper of Medicine: The Power of One" Totem Animal painting by Kate Dardine

Native Americans believe that the Bear has strong medicine magic and many tribes consider bears to be Shaman themselves. They are known to American Indian tribes and their Shamans as “Keeper of Medicine” because they keep all the ancient healing secrets of the Indians and the spirits of the Earth. This painting is called "Keeper of Medicine: the Power of One" and is a 20x20 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. A part of my Totem Animal series, this Bear teaches that each of us carries the all the knowledge of the Universe within ourselves. "If You Can't See the Tail, You've Got to Look in the Eyes" close up detail of oil painting by Kate Dardine

This is a detail of a painting I am currently working on. The painting shows the whole wolf, but I am liking this cropped version and am thinking of doing a painting - maybe 30x30, with this crop. If you are interested in reading about my painting process, I invite you to read my online journal. You can also subscribe to my journal and have my updates delivered right to your internet home page or your email.

I also send out a roughly bi-weekly e-letter - this week I am offering a painting at a very attractive price for a limited time - but only to those who have joined my Art Tribe and signed up for Painted Wind Studio News. Click here to join the Tribe!

The Universe is Infinite by Kate Dardine

"The Universe is Infinite" is part of my Equine Spirit series. I was reading the book, "Notes from the Universe" by Mike Dooley and the title of the painting was one of the daily meditations.

This painting is about choices, and is a meditation on living life firmly planted in what we have determined is "reality" while dreaming of another existence which holds all the possibilities of the Universe. But which is real, and which the illusion?

This is a 20x20 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, available for purchase from my website, www.katedardine.com.
