Today's painting is painted with the painting knives giving it lots of texture. In fact most all of my recent sunflower paintings have been painted using these knives. This painting had an interesting creative process from start to finish. I first primed and gesso'd the board, then using matte mediums, added scraps of paper in leopard and floral motifs to sort of form the outlines of trees and bushes. I then picked up my pallet knives and started painting mixing large quantities of paint, and generously swiping them on the board resulting in a thick, textural and loose painting. In the end, almost all the paper and board are covered, but it was fun to see what would happen in this creative process.

Art Walk Donation

This resplendent floral painting is a donation for the Salida Art Walk held each year in June. I plan on painting 2 pieces, and this is the first one. Last year I painted geese and they were very popular. This painting has truly been evolving over the last week and a half, as it went from one kind of experimental piece morphing into another. My intent was to have a piece with more contemporary elements and I started off by first painting my board in geometric patterns of varying hues of colored paint. I really liked the effect, but somehow it didn't go with my bouquet of flowers..... The tree branches and birds were always on the scene too along with our noisy lizard. Somehow the painting all pulled together today. It is an unusual painting for me, but a happy piece none-the-less, with lots of texture and happy blossoms .... Today, I just wanted to do a small painting. I was looking through some reference photos I took of some flower garden this fall and came upon one with lots of Bachelor Buttons. These wonderful flowers look blue, or purple or combinations of the two depending on the lighting and the flowers that surround them. In one of my photos a fat dragonfly was passing thru the flowers.
